Make your own upcycled Denim Jacket (In-person workshop at the Hera Vintage studios)

Who is this class for?

As part of the sustainable fashion workshops at Hera Vintage, the Upcycled Denim Jacket Workshop is ideal for beginners who want to try their hand at creating their first sewing project

It is also for more experienced sewers who would like to learn more about sustainable fashion and the art of upcycling through visible mending and strengthening of fabrics by using patching and sashiko stitch.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to upcycle a tired and damaged denim jacket using a vintage embroidered panel

·        How to find your way around a sewing machine

·        How to take a pattern from the back panel of the jacket

·        How to cut out and apply your embroidered panel to make the most of the design

·        Basic stitches and sewing in straight lines

·        How to use visible stitch to repair and strengthen vintage garments and fabrics

·        The ancient art of sashiko stitch

 What will I take away from the day?

You will take away your very own upcycled denim jacket,

A set of written instructions so you can re create similar pieces at home

A better understanding of sustainable fashion, repair and upcycling that you can take forward to future creative endeavors.

(Please bare in mind that this project is a slow fashion one, so although you will have started the sashiko stitch during the day you will most likely have some more hand sashiko to continue at home.)

How much experience do I already need?

This class is for beginners –I am on hand to help and guide throughout the day so no need to be nervous !!

What do I need to bring?

You will need to bring a denim jacket of your choice and a fabric panel that you would like to decorate your jacket with, this can be printed, embroidered or tapestry fabric. If you would like me to source a jacket or panel please get in touch, this can be arranged at an additional cost.

Time; 7 hours including a 30 min lunch break. (10 am-5.00pm)

Once booked onto the workshop an email outlining the day will follow.

The workshop will be hosted by Louise , founder and director of Hera Vintage. Louise has a 1st Class Honours Degree in Fashion Design, BTEC National Diploma in Surface Pattern Design and 25 years of experience as a Designer and Buyer for brands including Laura Ashley, House of Fraser, Evans, Peacocks and Matalan amongst others.

As part of the sustainable fashion workshops at Hera Vintage, the Upcycled Dungaree class is ideal for beginners who want to try their hand at creating their first sewing project

It is also for more experienced sewers who would like to learn more about sustainable fashion and the art of upcycling through using fabrics that have had a previous life.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to upcycle a textile of your choice into a fantastic pair of dungarees

·        How to find your way around a sewing machine

·        How to make the most of using upcycled fabrics and creating styling features

·        How to repair / make the most of damaged fabric

·        How to cut out a basic pattern

·        How to construct and finish a garment to a professional standard

How much experience do I already need?

This class is for beginners - intermediate seamstresses, You may not have made anything on your own before but you have had some experience on a domestic sewing machine. I am on hand to help and guide throughout the day so no need to be nervous!!

What do I need to bring?

You will need to bring some gorgeous fabric that you would like to save from landfill. What can this be I hear you ask? It can be anything, a pair of 60’s curtains, embroidered table linen’s from your Nans attic… even a bed sheet, its all welcome here!! Do not worry if it is marked or is damaged in anyway, we like a challenge and those are the textiles we most like to save.

If you would like me to source your textiles please get in touch, this can be arranged at an additional cost.

Fashion Life Drawing Class

Join Louise at the Hera Vintage design studio where you will receive full tuition on the art of fashion life drawing.

The class is open to complete beginners in a relaxed environment with tuition that encourages us to relax and discover our own unique drawing style.

Doors will be at 6.30 with the class starting at 7pm until 9pm where our model Ornella will pose in a variety of vintage fashions ranging from 30 second poses to 30 min poses.

There will be a short break in the middle of the event for a costume change.

The event takes place at Hera Vintages studio, an active sustainable fashion design house in the Whaley Bridge

Toilet's and tea and coffee making facilities are available , please also feel free to bring any other beverages you would like.

The cost of this class does not include materials but there will be the opportunity to purchase materials on the evening.

Upcycled Tote Bag Workshop - April 2023

As part of the sustainable fashion workshop series at Hera Vintage, the Upcycled Tote Bag Workshop is ideal for beginners who want to try their hand at creating their first sewing project. Equally this would suit more experienced sewers who want to learn about sustainable fashion and the art of upcycling through the use of patching and sashiko stitch.

Ahead of the workshop you will source a denim jacket and tapestry (guidance on what you’re looking for will be given) which you will then combine on the day to make your own unique piece like the one above using our in-house industrial sewing machines. You will then learn how to strengthen and repair any damage by hand using a combination of patching and the ancient Japanese art of Sashiko stitching.

Skills you’ll learn on the day:

  • How to find your way around a sewing machine 

  • How to take a pattern from the back panel of the jacket 

  • How to cut out and apply your embroidered panel to make the most of the design  

  • Basic stitches and sewing in straight lines 

  • How to use visible stitch to repair and strengthen vintage garments and fabrics 

  • How and where to apply Sashiko stitch 

 

What will I take away from the day

As part of the sustainable fashion workshop series at Hera Vintage, the Upcycled Hair Scrunchie Workshop is ideal for beginners who want to try their hand at creating their first sewing project. Equally this would suit more experienced sewers who want to learn about sustainable fashion and the art of upcycling through the use of patching and sashiko stitch.

Ahead of the workshop you will source a denim jacket and tapestry (guidance on what you’re looking for will be given) which you will then combine on the day to make your own unique piece like the one above using our in-house industrial sewing machines. Fashion Life Drawing

Join us for our first ever Fashion Life Drawing session at Hera Vintage led by the Founder, Louise Chipperfield. There will be a live model wearing a selection of Hera Vintage clothing in a range of poses.

Having led Life Drawing Sessions in Manchester, UK for many years and with a background in Fashion Design, Louise will lead the evening offering guidance and advice as required.

This will be an online event only.

How it works

The tickets are free, but please “buy” your ticket below so I can anticipate numbers

Rummage through your wardrobe… what do you not use / love/ need anymore ?

Select 3 items, these can be clothing or accessories but no footwear or underwear please ( not at this swap anyway !) wash and iron

Bring your items along to our Sip and swap and I will exchange your items for 3 vouchers for 3 items of other clothing.

Live music and refreshments available on the evening.
